If you’re an old-head like me and get excited about new appliances, this post is for you! Also, sometimes I write things for money. This is one of those things.
Proper care and maintenance of home appliances extend their lifespan. It can also improve their efficiency and save lots of money on repairs and replacement.
Appliances are definitely designed to make life easier, but if we neglect them like we do our gym routine, it’s going to lead to malfunctions and breakdown…much like our mental health. Take a look at these practical steps to ensure appliances are running smoothly for many years.
Follow the Manufacturer’s Instructions
One of the first things to do is follow the manufacturer’s instructions. These will come with the user manual (and are also likely online because it’s 2025, you guys).
Make sure to thoroughly read these instructions because failure to do so can actually result in voiding your warranty and that’s no bueno. Do not lose money or cause unnecessary damage–READ! Keep manuals handy for quick reference to troubleshoot or perform routine care.
Clean Regularly
I know our hair looks better on day 3 (or 4…), but dirt, dust, and grease build-up can negatively affect the performance of appliances. For example, make sure you regularly clean your refrigerator because this is going to improve the energy efficiency tremendously. While you’re in there, toss out that Greek yogurt you’ve been promising to eat. It’s time. Just say goodbye.
Be sure to wipe down the interior of your microwave to stop odors and residue from hardening in it. When you consistently clean, you minimize wear and tear and keep appliances looking brand new.
Avoid Overloading
When you overload washers, dryers and dishwashers it is going to put a strain on the motor and reduce performance over time. Make sure you follow load recommendations in order to avoid damaging the internal components of your appliances.
Be sure to spread loads evenly so that you can maintain its balance. This is especially true for washing machines because it will help to prevent unnecessary vibrations and breakdowns. In short: if after doing a load of laundry, your washing machine is in a different place than where it started, you’ve likely overloaded it. Ask me how I know.
Inspect Hoses and Filters
Hoses and filters are common culprits in appliance malfunction so you need to watch out for them. Be sure to check the hoses in your washing machine and your dishwashers.
If you see cracks or leaks make sure you replace them as necessary. Also clean and replace filters in your refrigerator, dryers and air conditioners regularly so that you get maximum efficiency and airflow from them.
Use OEM Replaced Parts
When repairing or replacing parts, opt for OEM replacement parts. These types of parts are specifically designed for your appliance and ensure compatibility. As a result, they offer better reliability and performance compared to their generic alternatives.
Maintain Proper Settings
Incorrect settings can strain appliances and increase energy consumption. Always make sure you stick to the appropriate settings for your ovens, refrigerators, and dishwasher.
You can adjust the settings based on the task and the type of food that is being stored and/or cooked. Make sure to adjust the temperature controls to all the recommended guidelines to avoid overheating or unnecessary cooling.
Sticking to these basic maintenance tasks ensures more use out of your machines. That way, when you have a breakdown, your washer and dryer won’t.
