The Interview That Changed My Life. As Told By Me.

By Stephanie Jankowski 15 Comments

You guys, I’m kind of a big deal now.

*Pops collar, trips over dog*

You may have heard my presence was requested at the KDKA studios in Pittsburgh? Talk radio host Mangino contacted me last week after my article, I Put My Husband Before Our Kids, exploded all over the Internet. Lots of people loved it, some people hated it (mostly people who don’t have kids or a husband, so how’s that for DEERRRRRRR?), but I got to talk about it on the radio. Twice.

One evening, I was asked to call the station at 10PM which is waaaay past my bedtime, but I managed to form coherent sentences for about 35 minutes. It was SO fun!

*Squee!*

None of Mangino’s listeners called in to tell me I’m a horrific mother, and I didn’t even curse. My parents were so proud! Then yesterday, I drove to the KDKA studios for a face-to-face interview which required a bra and a quick hair brushing, but I committed. Here is my experience in pictures:

Every good guest brings a housewarming gift. A copy of my book? Well, sure.
Rain + Labor Day = zero traffic. I arrive at the studios 30 minutes early and sit in my car like a stalker.

Oooh! A van! I have a chance to look at this for about 15 minutes as I am locked out of the building. I believe I've been punked, but manage to slip in quiet as a ninja past an unassuming intern. Okay, fine. He held the door for me.

Mangino introduces me to the mic and headphones, and I promptly put the headphones on backwards then giggle nervously.

Me, giggling nervously. Also? I look drunk.

Waking at 6AM on a holiday (and not because the kids want to show me what Santa brought), is only worth it for an interview and the season's first pumpkin latte with my BFF. It was technically September so don't judge, but if you must, base your opinions on the fact that I just wrote BFF.

I was a little confused because no one in Starbucks asked for my autograph, and I had to pay for my coffee, but I think they were just playing it cool.

When I got home, I was all, “Family, fetch me my laptop so I can dutifully blog about my very important self, and please infuse some lemon and strawberry into my water.” The baby spit up on me, the 3y/o whined that I was gone too long then attached herself to my hip for the remainder of the day, the 5y/o confirmed that he would not be cleaning up the playroom, and my husband was like, “If you don’t get to the grocery store today, we’re eating cardboard for dinner.”

Back to civilian life and it feels so good.

You’re so sweet–thank you! The 30 minutes would’ve been worse if not for something called the Party Pod on my favorite radio station; it’s a whole bunch of party songs that are throw-backs to my high school days. I was jamming out like a maniac, which I’m sure was appreciated by the passers-by ๐Ÿ˜‰

Your daughter was born 20 days before mine (not that I’m stalking or anything, but I wouldn’t look in your bushes if I were you) so that means I have 20 more days to look as good as you do in that green dress (omg, seriously, I need to stop with the stalk-y talk). Guess I shouldn’t have had that ice cream for lunch. Or McDonalds. Except that now I’ve said it, I kind of want ice cream and McDonalds for dinner. Anyhoo, congrats on the radio interview!

      Thank you!

That’s because you’re old and out of touch. When the cool kids want everyone else to know they’re cool, they put the collar of their shirt up (hence, popping the collar). Because I’m not really cool, I would try (popping the collar), but end up tripping. Get it?

Way to ruin my one liner, husband. Sheesh.

Last paragraph=a blogger’s “famous” life. I love you, though, and I DO think you’re a pretty big deal. I loved all the pictures. SO happy you went “viral” and had some cool opportunities!
