They Serve Bagels In Heaven

By Stephanie Jankowski 2 Comments

Her voice, thick with New Jersey, was reminiscent of Marisa Tomei’s in My Cousin Vinny (or so thinks this Yank!). There was a sweetness to it, something calming about it. I couldn’t help but giggle as we spoke over the phone, giddy to have this brilliant woman at my disposal to ask any questions I wanted.

SQUEEEEEE!

Let me take you back a couple of months to the day I received an email asking if I wanted to read this book that could possible change my life. How dramatic! A life changing book?! Sure, why not? <insert eye roll here> Then I looked it up on Amazon and scoured the reviews. I’ll tell you why I said YES to reading this book: because too many of us have lost loved ones, and have questions about the Other Side. Because the news only reports the bad, and the media shoves it down our throats until we choke on it. In a world of BLAH, They Serve Bagels in Heaven is BEAUTIFUL, and so is author Ms. Irene Weinberg. I’ll let Amazon tell you about the book:

One Couple’s Story of Love, Eternity, and the Cosmic Importance of Everyday Life is based on the true life story of Irene Weinberg, whose husband Saul died next to her in a tragic car accident. The amazing messages Irene received before, during and after the accident contained a Directive from Heaven, opening her to a profound Spiritual Awakening that took Irene on a healing journey from devastating loss to a renewed sense of inner strength, spiritual wisdom and passion for life. After reading this funny, touching and inspiring eternal love story, you will gain comfort, solace and wisdom from its healing messages about love, crossing over, past lives, what heaven does about evil, soul mates, healing both in heaven and on Earth and more. You will surely both laugh out loud and weep when you read this earthy, humorous and magical story. As THEY SERVE BAGELS IN HEAVEN embraces you, it will change your perceptions about today and give you hope for tomorrow. A healing salve for your soul!

I read the book in, like, record time. Since having kids, my bedtime is earlier and my days busier, which leaves little time for devouring books the way I used to. But I couldn’t put this one down. Whether you’re a believer or not, this sweet read has a fantastic love story at its core, and you need to snag a copy if for no other reason than to feel all the feels.

When Irene offered to chat with me over the phone, I jumped at the chance. After reading her book, I had so many questions. Soul mates! Past lives! The accident! Her Jewish faith! I couldn’t get enough. Fortunately, she showed me a lot more patience than Marisa Tomei showed Vinny, and this is the fruit of our labor…

My Interview with They Serve Bagels In Heaven author, Irene Weinberg

Me:

After completing the book/communicating with Saul, did you have to grieve again or did you feel a sense of peace and closure? (He died in 1997, and the book was published in 2001)

Irene:

I’m always missing him on a physical and emotional level, but there is comfort knowing the Other Side exists, and he’s there waiting.

Me:

I understand you were met with a lot of hostility when you began your journey to write this book; what was the most surprising or “worst” response you received?

Irene:

I was surprised by those who had been friends, but turned their backs on me so quickly. But because of them, I don’t live life worrying about what others think. Live your own truth.

Me:

The stories of how you and Saul spent previous lifetimes together are AMAZING. After you learned of them, has anything ever triggered a memory or did you ever feel like, “Hey, I kinda remember that!” In short, have you ever felt a connection to your past while living here in the present?

Irene:

Once, a man (I was dating) showed up (for our date) and said he just felt compelled to buy this new cologne. It was the same Saul used to wear! And I thought, “Oh, Saul! What a sense of humor!” Also, once I visited a Healer who sat at her computer typing out my stories; she knew of my past life as a violinist, as the little boy in Israel, and Saul the rabbi. She typed furiously and the stories just poured out. The most amazing thing was that the Healer communicated the story using Hebrew words she didn’t even know! *laughs* Even if you don’t believe me, it is one heck of a love story!

Me:

How did Saul’s children and other family react when they learned you had been communicating with him? How did they feel about the book?

Irene:

My natural-born son is proud of me, but a little embarrassed. He’s like, “You do what you’ve got to do, but keep it far away from me!” I have 2 step-children, too: my stepdaughter didn’t want to read the book and still hasn’t, and my stepson thinks it’s cool!

Me:

I have a dear friend who swears she sees dead people just as she’s falling asleep or waking up. Her little girl (who just turned 4) has begun describing my friend’s deceased grandmother, whom she has never seen nor met, as a “lady in her bedroom.”  I’m curious about your thoughts and any advice you might have for my friend and her daughter.

Irene:

Your friend and her daughter are blessed! What a gift! I really think she should reach out to a healer to handle her gift and direct her. There are tremendous mediums who help others, some are mentioned in the back of my book; I hope she doesn’t shut (her gift) down because of fear.

Me:

Were there any results or reactions from the book that especially touched your heart, or made you feel like YES! that’s why I wrote this book!! ? story of 80 yo

Irene:

There was an 80-year-old man who read my book. He wrote me and said I gave him comfort about crossing over; because of my book, he is no longer afraid of death. Then he bought 3 dozen books for his family and friends!

Me:

Both you and Saul have the same message: we are all worthy of love, and love is what we should show one another. How have you changed or done things differently since committing yourself to that message? How can we all practice what you preach?

Irene:

I don’t judge people, I’m very open to new ideas and experiences. I also have more self-love–I’m willing to forgive myself, cut myself a break. We all make mistakes, but we don’t all learn the lessons from the mistakes.

If you read nothing else today, read this: Irene’s husband died beside her, and while she sat, trapped and bleeding to death, her only thoughts were of her son: she needed to survive. Ever the mother, Irene lives each day believing we can choose our attitude. We can choose to be happy. A bad day doesn’t mean a bad life, and an attitude of gratitude can mean the difference between living and dying.

Thank you, Irene, for your time, your beautiful energy, and especially your kindness (and the free book!). You’ve turned tragedy into triumph in a way only you could. Choose love, choose happiness, and live your truth.

Great review! The best you can say about a book is that you couldn’t put it away, you had to read it. Thanks.
